Odd Wisconsin Archive | Threats and Violence in Congress

This week's news reports of violence and death threats against lawmakers who voted for the health care bill recalls the vicious attacks in Congress that preceded the Civil War. Wisconsin was at the center of one of them.
A bloody melee broke out in Congress on February 8, 1858, that brought fame to Congressman John F. Potter . The House was engaged that day in a heated debate over sectional issues. Northern representatives outnumbered those from the South and they pressed their parliamentary advantage, infuriating the few Southerners present.
A fist fight between two members quickly turned into a general brawl, and during the fray Potter pulled the hairpiece off an adversary's head. At this, a cry went up in the gallery that Potter had "taken a scalp." Potter's graphic account of that day is included in our online collection of Local History & Biography Articles. When things finally settled down, Potter was covered in blood and marked by Southerners as an enemy.
In the months that followed, partisan violence rose to such levels that the N.Y. Tribunereported, "Congress has become little better than a den of semi-savages." In April of 1860, following another fight, Potter was formally challenged to a duel by a notoriously pompous Virginia representative. He accepted, and as the one challenged, had the right to choose weapons. So Potter insisted that the duelists wield bowie knives "at a distance of four feet." His adversary, Rep. Roger Pryor of Virginia, beat a hasty retreat.
A month later, the Republican Party held its national convention in Chicago and nominated Abraham Lincoln for president. At the convention, delegates from Missouri presented Potter with a 31-pound, 6-foot-long folding knife to commemorate his "victory." It was a highlight of the convention and earned national press exposure when Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper dubbed it the "monster bowie knife." It is now in the collection of the Wisconsin Historical Museum, where you can see it in the Odd Wisconsin exhibit.

An Absence of Class

I agree with this comment made on New York Times Op-Ed columnist Bob Herbert's piece:

It's about time somebody spoke out about what the Republican Party has disintegrated into and you have hit the nail squarely on the head. Now left with only threats to utter, the Republicans will finally have to prove their claims about this legislation. And this, they have no chance of doing. All their threats about capturing Democratic seats in November may well backfire on them. Once the American people see what really has been accomplished they just may punish the Republicans for their endless intentional lies and deception. Truth and justice have finally prevailed and the first truly significant act of Congress in the past decade has occurred.

Civil Disobedience and the Census by Robert Greenslade

Civil Disobedience and the Census by Robert Greenslade

I recently heard someone say the time has come for some civil disobedience and the intrusive nature of the Census makes it the perfect place to start. I could not agree more. The American people need to draw a line in the sand and tell the reprobates in the federal government we will no longer tolerate their usurpations of power.
If the American people are going make a stand and go toe to toe with the federal government, then they need a basic understanding of some constitutional principles because these principles are universal and pertain to every power exercised by the federal government.

If this Bag was a Man We'd Marry it!

If Mulberry has carved a reputation as a quintessential English design house then the Mulberry Bayswater bag is a quintessential Mulberry bag.

This iconic bag is available in a wide variety of colors and finishes. There's even a limited edition Bayswater in ostrich skin, our personal favorite. The bag can be used either as a shoulder bag or handbag. The
Bayswater bag has a flap closure which can then be secured with the postman's clasp and Mulberry padlock (complete with it's own key).

Heavenly.

Alas, this bag is no longer for sale in fuschia. The runner up? How about this little number by Bally? The Alunina in Italian patent leather is a thing of beauty yes?

Bally Alunina
This beautiful Bally bag
will be at the ready whenever you need it. Alunina's quilted, glossy patent calf leather and high-shine hardware can add a chic edge to daytime ensembles, or be perfectly pretty for a night out. Dust bag included. There's only one thing to say - "I DO!"

And, for the finishing touch, can you say "Wham Bham Thank You Derek Lam"- For these to die for sunglasses as the perfect match:
Romy from Derek Lam
WHO SAYS all the good ones are taken? ;-)

Haitians say thank you

United Nations World Food Programme Bulletin

I Read This
Dear Supporter,

I’ve been moved by the tremendous outpouring of support we’ve received for our lifesaving work in Haiti. You are truly making a difference.

We thought you’d like to hear “thank you” directly from Haitians you’re helping. Even as they struggle to cope with the devastation after the earthquake – losing their homes, their jobs, their friends and family – they wanted to thank you for the hope you’ve given.

Watch the video to see the impact you’re making on people’s lives through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP): http://bit.ly/bPGRKN

Now it’s my turn to personally say thank you. When many Haitians thought they had no future after the earthquake struck, donors in the U.S. generously stepped forward.

What we’ve been able to accomplish in Haiti, thanks to people like you, is truly remarkable. The gifts we have received have been immediately put to good use. We have:

-- Provided more than 4 million people with food assistance. We’re also responding to the special needs of children and pregnant women.

-- Started cooking meals for schoolchildren in Port-au-Prince. The goal is to reach 72,000 children from some 148 schools. This is in addition to school meals programs that have already resumed in many parts of the country.

-- Put nearly 500 staff on the ground, operating around the clock to ensure as many people as possible receive the food assistance they need.

That’s just the beginning of our urgent relief and recovery work in Haiti. Part of our recovery strategy is to support people who are at risk, boost attendance and learning through school meal programs, and empower the local population to rebuild their lives.

Throughout the weekend, we’ve been tracking two additional tragedies -- flooding triggered by heavy rains in parts of Haiti where earthquake survivors are living in camps, and the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday.

While the quake was far stronger than the one that struck Haiti, human suffering in Chile will be far less extensive due to the location of the earthquake and the country’s long history in preparing for such disasters. Our teams are on standby to help if needed.

I am heartened to know that individuals like you will step forward when called upon, not only to extend a lifeline in a crisis but also on behalf of the billion people who are chronically hungry around the world.

Because the World Food Program relies entirely on voluntary contributions, our critical work would not be possible without your support. You demonstrated the power of individuals to come together and make a tremendous difference.

Thank you,

Josette Sheeran
Executive Director, World Food Program
